It’s every young professional’s worst nightmare. You’re at a job interview, shaking the interviewer’s hand, when you notice it–a big ol’ crease right in the middle of your shoe. Your heart sinks as you try to think of an explanation, but you know there’s no coming back from this. You’re doomed.

Or are you? While it may seem impossible to avoid creasing your shoes when you walk, there are actually a few easy things you can do to keep your shoes looking sharp. Read on to learn how to walk without creasing your shoes!

1. Walk with Purpose

The best way to avoid creasing your shoes is to walk with purpose. Don’t saunter or stroll–walk quickly and confidently with your head up and shoulders back. Not only will this help you avoid creases in your shoes, but it’ll also make you look more confident and sure of yourself. It will also bring your weight naturally off of your toes and more onto your heels preventing creases from happening.

2. Watch Where You Step

Another way to keep those pesky creases out of your shoes is to be mindful of where you step. Things like cracks in the sidewalk and loose gravel can put undue stress on your shoes and cause them to crease. So watch where you step, and be careful of any potential hazards that could damage your shoes (or worse, cause you to trip!). If you aren’t trying to crease your shoes then make sure you aren’t walking uphill that will absolutely cause your shoe to bend.

3. One Foot in Front of the Other

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning nonetheless. When walking, always keep one foot in front of the other so that your weight is evenly distributed and your shoes don’t get scuffed up or damaged. This will help extend the life of your shoes and keep them looking their best.

4. Slow Down

Finally, if all else fails, try slowing down. It may not be possible to avoid creases altogether, but walking slowly can help minimize their appearance. If you must walk slowly for some reason (like if you’re carrying something heavy), just be sure to keep your head up and shoulders back so that you still look confident and poised.

If you do crease your shoe you can always use techniques to uncrease your shoes.

There you have it! Five easy tips for avoiding those unsightly creases in your shoes. So next time you’re getting ready for a job interview or important meeting, remember these tips and walked into that room with confidence–and not a wrinkle in sight!
