How to Stretch Out Your New Golf Shoes (So You Don’t Get Blisters)

You just bought a brand new pair of golf shoes. They’re sleek, they’re stylish, and they were built with serious comfort in mind. There’s just one problem: they’re a little too snug. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Here are a few tips on how to stretch out your new shoes so you can Focus on your form—not the pain.

1. Wear them around the house. 

The best way to break in any new shoe is to simply wear it around as much as possible. So, put on those new golf shoes and go about your day-to-day business. The more you walk in them, the more they’ll loosen up and conform to the shape of your feet. Just be sure not to get them too dirty; you want to save those pristine shoes for the course!

2. Use a shoe stretcher. 

If simply wearing them isn’t doing the trick, you can try using a shoe stretcher. These devices essentially help to stretch out your shoes from the inside out, giving you a little bit of extra room to wiggle your toes. Shoe stretchers are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most sporting goods stores.

3. Freeze them overnight ( seriously). 

This may sound like an old wives’ tale, but it really does work! Just place your shoes in a plastic bag, fills two zip-top bags with water, and then place them inside your golf shoes overnight. The water will expand as it freezes, stretching out your shoes in the process. Just be sure to remove the bags of water before wearing your frozen-and-stretched shoes on the course—you don’t want any surprises mid-swing!

4. Heat them up

Another method for stretching out golf shoes (or any leather shoe, for that matter) is to alternately heat and cool them. You can do this by filling two zip-top bags with rice, microwaving them for 30 seconds, and then placing them inside your golf shoes for 20 minutes or so. The rice will absorb the heat and soften the leather, making it more pliable and easier to stretch. After heating up your shoes, let them cool completely before wearing them on the course; you don’t want to end up with blisters!

5. See a professional 

If all else fails, you can always take your golf shoes to a cobbler or other professional shoe technician who will have the tools and expertise necessary to properly stretch them out for you. This is usually a fairly quick and inexpensive process, but it’s always best to call ahead and make sure that the shop offers this service before making the trip over there!
